Pepe the Frog killed by wrong kind of success

Pepe the Frog killed by wrong kind of success

Story from CBR

Yes, it was ultimately Matt Furie's decision to kill off Pepe, but I can only imagine what he much have felt about this.

In a way, everyone who creates something has some hope that their creation becomes bigger than them. You want to make something that people know about and recognize.

This, however, was something else entirely, and I can only imagine the horror as that very thing happened in the worst way possible. More people know Pepe than I'm sure ever seemed possible. He's a stupid stoned frog character, and somehow turned into the mascot of people who freely label themselves as Nazis.

This won't stop the memes, and seems like something that would ultimately be a futile gesture towards trying to get back control of his own creation. Sometimes, though, even if what you can do is very small, you just have to do what you can.

Good luck with the future, Matt. Here's hoping that your next successful venture turns out differently.
