Montreal comic store turning to GoFundMe to survive
Not strictly indie comics, but I'm fascinated by the economics of comics and comic book stores. I've more seriously considered starting a comic book store than makes any sense economically, especially with stories like this.
It's an intensely dangerous business, and this particular case with Librairie Astro has a lot of moving parts:
- The thin margins on most comics anyway
- International commerce
- The disparity between residential and commercial taxes in Montreal (more detail thanks to Bleeding Cool)
I love comic shops, and hate to see them fearing for their survival. There's a complicated situation here that's not going to be solved by a single funding campaign, but if you want to help, take the opportunity when it's right in front of you.
